Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal treatment is important to achieve and maintain healthy gums. Even with outstanding oral care, it can be easy to develop gum disease. It’s one of the most common dental issues we see, yet in most cases can be easily treated. We’re delighted to help our patients get back on the path to their ideal smiles.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is a technique where the nerves of teeth are removed and replaced with a plastic like material called gutta percha. This allows the patient to maintain their teeth, yet eliminates tooth pain.
Myofacial Pain Therapy
(TMJ)
Myofacial Pain Therapy is a TMJ treatment for facial muscle pain, ear pain or pain around the joint of the face. Often mouthguards can be fabricated to relax these muscles and are used as a tool in preparation for other dental procedures.
Pain Management
Pain management is controlled with TV in every treatment room, headphones, along with the latest intravenous and oral sedation techniques. With over 20 years experience sedating apprehensive patients, Dr. Kosinski is well known for helping his patients relax and complete their dental therapy.
Oral Cancer Screening
In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to our patients, We are proud to announce the inclusion of the ViziLite* exam as an integral part of our annual comprehensive oral cancer screening program.
One person dies every hour from oral cancer in the United States – and the mortality has remained unchanged for more than 40 years. Alarmingly, more than 25% of oral cancer victims have no lifestyle risk factors. Clinical studies have determined that using ViziLite after the standard oral cancer examination improves the clinician’s ability to identify, evaluate and monitor suspicious areas at their earliest stages. Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the potentially disfiguring effects of oral cancer and possibly save your life. Proven screening technologies such as mammogram, Pap smear, PSA and colonoscopy offer the same types of early detection of cancer. ViziLite is an easy and painless examination that gives this practice the best chance to find any oral abnormalities you may have at the earliest possible stage. This technology is the only FDA-cleared device for the identification and monitoring of oral abnormalities that could lead to cancer.
Oral cancer risk by patient profile is listed below:
Highest Risk: Patients age 40 and older and lifestyle risk factors (tobacco use); Patients with a history of oral cancer.
High Risk: Patients age 40 and older; tobacco users of any age Increased Risk: Patients age 18 – 39.
General Dentistry – FAQs
If I’m pregnant, should I go to the dentist?
Hygiene appointments are crucial to minimizing the risk of developing pregnancy gingivitis, also known as gum inflammation. If you have a severe mouth infection during your pregnancy, you’re more likely to deliver your baby pre-term if you don’t seek treatment.
While regular checkups and cleanings can help keep your baby safe, it’s best to save any elective dental procedures for after your pregnancy.
Is it necessary to update my x-rays once a year?
Annual X-rays can prevent root canal treatment, excessive loss of tooth structure, and bone loss. We can detect cavities and treat them before they develop into a severe infection. If you keep up with getting your X-rays once a year. you can be assured of the health of your smile.
Should my tooth be sensitive to hot or cold after I have had a filling?
If sensitivity lasts more than a couple of weeks, contact us immediately at 248-646-8651 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Kosinski. He’ll evaluate your tooth and determine the best course of action.
What does periodontal treatment involve?
Children’s Dentistry – FAQs
Are fluoride drops necessary?
Fluoride drops aren’t necessary, but they can help keep your child’s teeth safe.
Incorporating fluoride into the tooth structure is a highly effective method of preventing tooth decay. However, it’s important to check with your child’s pediatrician or dentist about the age and dosage of fluoride supplementation.
Too much fluoride can cause fluorosis on your child’s adult teeth before they erupt. Fluorosis won’t harm your child’s health, but they’ll have streaks or spots on their teeth. Fluorosis can often be reversed by a dental professional.
Is taking care of baby (primary) teeth important?
Losing teeth at a young age can also have significant social effects and have an impact on your child’s self-confidence as they grow up, as well as impairing their ability to speak properly. Cavities and gingivitis in children can also affect their health.
It’s important for children to practice good oral hygiene habits and come in for regular check-ups at our Bingham Farms office.
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants can last for up to 10 years. At each check-up, we’ll examine your child’s sealants to make sure they’re still in place and perform any touch-ups if they’re necessary.
When should a child have their first dental visit?
Prior to your child’s first dental visit, it’s important to take care of their gums and emerging teeth. Clean your baby’s gums and mouth with a soft baby toothbrush or a wet washcloth. When teeth start to erupt, use a very small amount of child-safe toothpaste to gently brush the teeth.
Oral Hygiene – FAQs
Is flossing necessary?
If you have difficulty flossing with regular floss, alternative interdental cleaners are available. These are sold in the form of interdental brushes or water flossers. We recommend using more than one of these methods together for optimal oral health.
Which is the best toothbrush?
Remember to replace your toothbrush at least every three months. Oral bacteria, as well as other environmental effects from your bathroom, can build up on your toothbrush. A fresh toothbrush ensures you’re keeping your teeth healthy.
How often should I have a cleaning?
If you’ve had gum problems, cleanings should be performed quarterly or as recommended by your treating dentist. Dr. Kosinski will let you know if you fall into a high-risk category, and he’ll work with you to create an oral hygiene routine that works for you.
Can I change the old silver fillings in my teeth?
