Dental Implants Are The Best Solution For Missing
Teeth
Expert Care Produces Years of Healthy Teeth
BINGHAM FARMS, MI -- Persons with missing teeth very
likely will suffer from bone loss which will produce several dental problems
including painful dentures, sore spots or facial structure collapse.
The well-researched solution that prevents the loss of bone and
allows for highly retentive permanent restorations is to have a dental implant,
an artificial tooth root that actually replaces the tooth root in the bone.
The dental implant is placed in the area where the extraction
occurred and is held in place by bone just like the roots of the original
tooth.
"The roots of your teeth are embedded in the upper or lower
jawbone, holding your teeth firmly in the mouth, explains Dr. Timothy Kosinski,
DDS, of SmileCreator, Bingham Farms, who is a recognized expert in dental
implants. "Teeth can be lost for a number of reasons, including periodontal
disease, which may cause bone loss and mobile teeth. When teeth become too
loose, they need to be removed, leaving spaces in the bone."
The problem with tooth loss is that the bone that previously
held the tooth begins to "dissolve" once the tooth is removed. The loss of bone
takes place from the top of the jaw, often resulting in a dip in the area '
where the teeth have been extracted.
One of the major benefits of having implants placed following
extractions is that the placement of implants reduces or eliminates the loss of
bone. This means that most of the original bone will be maintained which
virtually solves the problems of bone loss.
Once the dental implants heal to the surrounding bone, a post
is placed into each implant and a crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the
implants. Unlike traditional dentures, dentures attached to dental implants are
highly retentive.
"Missing a tooth or teeth is a serious concern for our
patients," says Dr. Kosinski. "These individuals are not simply missing teeth,
but have become amputees. Loss of teeth results in a loss of personality and
integrity as a human being :a loss of quality of life."
Someone is a candidate for dental implant if they:
-
Have lost one or more teeth
-
Are fed up with their partial denture or overdenture
-
Have a loose denture on the lower jaw
-
Have lost bone in the area of a tooth extraction
-
Are considering a dental restoration with bridgework but are concerned about
preserving the integrity of the adjacent teeth.
The benefits of dental implants whenever a tooth is lost can be
experienced even if the tooth loss occurred five, ten, or even 20 years ago.
Dr. Kosinski will carefully evaluate each patient and, if
appropriate, one or more implants will be placed where teeth have been removed.
"An implant is the first step in preventing bone loss,"
stresses Dr. Kosinski. "Once the dental implants are in place, the bone will
gradually attach to the implants and create a very strong bond, just like the
roots of your natural teeth."
Once the bond has been established, Dr. Kosinski will restore
the implants so that your dentures, bridges, or crowns are attached to the
implants and will likely look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants with
dentures, bridges, or crowns are cleaned like your natural teeth and are
maintained by regular visits to the dentist and proper dental hygiene.
Denture wearers know that placing the denture on the upper or
lower jawbones causes a gradual continuous loss of bone. Once the bone has
flattened out, it is very difficult to keep a denture in place. This leads to
continuous sore spots, lack of stability, and sometimes embarrassment. Dental
implants can solve this problem.
Dental implants also can solve the problem experienced when
wearing an upper denture, namely reduced ability to taste food. When dental
implants are placed in the upper jaw and allowed to heal to bone, then a new
upper denture or fixed bridge can be fabricated and attached to the implants
without covering the palate. This change will lead to improved taste and more
natural function.
